Lactalis, a family-owned multinational dairy products company, was based in Laval (Mayenne) in the west of France. As of 2017, it was the world’s largest producer of cheese and one of the world’s biggest dairy groups. On October 19, 1933, Andre Besnier, the founder, had started a small cheese making company under the brand name Le petit Lavallo. In 1999, the name of the company was changed to Lactalis.
